DARRELL NULISCH

“The best blues singer you never heard”. That’s what he’s been called, along
with all the critical accolades and superlatives that anyone can think of.
After over 35 years as a mainstay performer of American Blues and Soul
Music, they’ve said it all. From the honkytonks of Texas and Louisiana, to
Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Hollywood Bowl to virtually touring the
world with his own band and others: Darrell Nulisch has left an indelible
mark.

Beginning his recording career in Dallas in the late seventies he has recorded
and produced eight solo CD’s and has appeared as a guest artist on
recordings with an impressive array of “Blues luminaries,” most recently
the Grammy nominated, release by James Cotton, “Cottomnouth Man”.
Sharing vocal responsibilities with the likes of Greg Allman, Delbert
McClinton, Keb Mo, and James himself. In addition to the Grammy nod,
James and “Cotton Mouth Man” received five National Blues Foundation
nominations including “Song of the Year” which Darrell sang.
In 1998 Darrell took the seat next to blues legend James Cotton, as James’
voice had succumbed to cancer. “I stayed beside Cotton for about six years
in a trio format that worked really well and was big fun,” Nulisch said. “I
think James and I were both ready for a change, so I left to do some writing,
and touring. James went back to a full band sound. I received a call from
James in 2010 upon the departure of his vocalist to come back, and that’s
where I’ve been since.”

“When singing for Cotton I take a very direct and respectfiil approach to the
music. I am always being me, but aware of my delivery. Sitting on the band
stand with James, for me, is very serious business.” I was even more grateful
to be asked to be part of an “all star” recording project.”
Growing up in Dallas in the fiflies and sixties Texas radio clearly had an
impact on his musical taste. The sounds of Southern Soul, Gospel, Blues and
Country Western, are obvious. “ My appreciation for Jazz has, over the
year’s, has become influential in my music.” In 1992, recorded in Detroit, a
C.D. he named Bluesoul was released. Since then he continues to use
“Bluesoul“ as a term to generally describe his sound, equal parts Blues and
Soul.”

A short list of artist Darrell has worked and/or recorded with: James Cotton,
Hubert Sumlin, Earl King, Matt “Guitar ” Murphy, Ronnie Earl, Anson
Funderburgh, Johnny Moeller, Willie Henderson, James Davis.
